The Gift of Giving Life

This week you can find Caleb's story on The Gift of Giving Life blog.   Hope to see you there!
My mom also wrote a wonderful article about my little Sister and Caleb that was featured on Life Site News

Life is sweet

Every life is truly a miracle...

Happy birthday Caleb

Janauary 6th was Caleb's birthday.
He would have been eight years old.

It was a sweet day to begin some traditions that will always be special for us.

We gave each of the boys a trunk with a special note from Caleb.
The note told them that each year on his birthday they would get something meaningful to put in their trunk to help them feel close to heaven.

In their trunks they found the DVD slide show we played at Caleb's funeral, a wink magnet, a copy of Caleb's funeral program and a DVD of Dallan's BYU devotional talk.
(you can watch it here or read it here)

Caleb's note also told them that each year the family would receive a present that would help us make a happy memory together!  This year we got a new board game to play!  (Caleb knows we love to play games :)

The note ended with a challenge for the boys to find a way to share a wink with someone and care for them in the same way they took such good care of him.

For church that day Dallan and the boys wore a tie tack with the letter C on it.  They were a special Christmas gift from Caleb's nurse and our dear friend, Hailey.  They loved having a quiet way to have Caleb close to their hearts.

I love imagining my boys taking this tie tack with them on their missions and taking the opportunity to tell their investigators about Caleb then bearing their testimonies of eternal families.

I know Caleb will be a special missionary companion for his brothers throughout their lives.

We were touched by the ways Caleb was remembered on his special day.  My family knew it was too cold to bring flowers to his grave, so they brought flowers to us instead.

We went to the cemetery right before the sun went down.  It was cold, but so beautiful.  We sang happy birthday to Caleb and thought of a way we would share a wink this year.  Then we let our balloons  go.

Heaven was here.  Caleb was close.  Our hearts were filled.

When we returned home we lit Caleb's birthday cake and watched a picture slide show while we ate.  It was sweet to hear our boys giggle as they watched pictures of them growing up with Caleb.

We miss Caleb every day.
We rejoice in the miracle of seven years.
And we thank our Savior Jesus Christ for making it possible for us to be a forever family.
As we Celebrate Caleb, we celebrate Him.

Happy birthday sweet Caleb.

We love you forever.

"What's Mine is Yours"

Because I know God loved Caleb first, then shared him with me.
 I will be forever grateful.

 "What's mine is Yours
 It's always been.
 What slips through my hands
has Your finger prints on it.
 I'm letting go
 Remembering
 though Heaven's doors feel shut
 they're wide open.
 What's mine is yours...

Christmas Eve

I love Christmas Eve and the traditions that fill the night! This year Christmas Eve was a sweet and tender day for our family. It was also a day to add some new traditions to a special night.

The day before Christmas Eve some dear friends stopped by our home with a basket filled with treasures and treats. Their sweet daughter passed away right around the time Caleb was born and they have been so kind to keep a careful watch on our little family. Among the treasures they brought was a "wink" luminary. The told us about a tradition at our cemetary where people place luminaries at their loved ones graves on Christmas Eve.  They explained that going there had become one of their favorite Christmas Eve traditions. We were so touched and knew that this would become one of our favorite traditions as well.

We started our Christmas Eve by celebrating Dallan's birthday! A Christmas Eve birthday suits my Merry husband perfectly.

We enjoyed a wonderful holiday dinner at my parents house then acted out the nativity together.

Mitchell insisted he got to be the angel for Caleb this year.
After we acted out the nativity we turned our the lights and lit candles around my mom's nativity stable that she got from Jerusalem.  We were each handed a piece of the nativity set and invited to share what our gift to the Savior would be this year.  After we shared our gift we put our piece into the stable.  This has been a tradition in my family for as long as I can remember.  I love the spirit that fills the room as we think about what we want to give the Savior.  We ended the evening by singing Christmas carols then Dallan and I left to take the boys to the cemetery.

When we arrived at the cemetery it was a tender sight to see luminaries lit for the loved ones of so many.  The boys each lit a candle and placed it on Caleb's grave along with our wink candle.  We wished Caleb a Merry Christmas and our hearts were filled with love for our Savior who made it possible for us to have him forever.
When we got home I mixed up some magic hot chocolate with sleeping sprinkles, and the boys found pajamas that the elves had left while we were gone!
We left our Christmas jar by Caleb's stocking and the boys chose to sleep together in Caleb's room.
They could hardly sleep as they anticipated the surprises that would be waiting for them in the morning.

This was a tender holiday season for us.  My heart ached for Caleb to be with us.   Yet in those aching moments my heart was also filled with a deeper understanding of the gift that was given to each of us.  Because Jesus came to the earth we will all live again.  Because he was born we all have the opportunity to return to our Heavenly Father.  Because he was willing to descend below all things and be our Savior, I know that death is not the end but new chapter in our eternal journey.  I know that we will be together again- and that gift fills my heart to overflowing.

Sea World Wink

Our last day in San Diego was spent at Sea World! We absolutely loved the sea life shows and being surrounded by Christmas and sunshine!
Our hearts were warmed as we made happy Christmas memories together...
